The International Art Brut Biennale 2023 was held in the former V&D and H&M buildings, Brink 110 and 180 respectively, in Hengelo. The exhibition was visited by 17,500 visitors in 10 days. Approximately 150 artists were invited to participate with over 1 200 works selected for display. In addition to the exceptional work of Dutch artists, there was submissions from Senegal, Iceland, Spain, France, and the Scandinavian countries, among others. For the first time, works by Cuban artists were also included in the Biennial.
In addition to the exhibition, the Art Brut Biennale offered, in collaboration with Special Arts, a varied program in the Brink 180 building, including: a fair where institutions' studios sell their own products and a workshop where children can draw a selfie. There is a focus on education and space for music, poetry, performances, and the Art Brut Café. At the same location is the Special Award exhibition, where artists were invited to submit work and an expert jury made a selection.
