Jorge Francisco Garcia Lastayo
Havana, 1985

Jorge began working in art from an early age. Permanently supported by his family, he attended various community art workshops in his neighborhood during his childhood and in 2000 he enrolled in a school for art instructors. Shortly thereafter, he left that school, as his interests and his urgent needs to create contradicted the school's values. From that moment, he decides to continue his artistic creation, as a self-taught artist. Jorge works incessantly at his home, engaging in different aspects concerning art. He uses simple materials and very singular resources that are not frequently used by others: resins, cardboard packaging, drawings inside plastic lamination, among other materials. After the loss of his grandmother and after several visits to the ossuary in the cemetery, he begins one of the most extensive series called Spiritual Nature. Shocked after discovering the funeral environment and making use of its main symbols: the cross; Jorge developed in these works an imaginary universe with a high degree of symbolic introspection. He recodifies everyday actions, as if he prepares us for a universe of new ideas and visual codes. In other words, he made use of stains and overlapping strokes of color denoting a more internal nature of personal expression.
